North Star Editions Acquires Jolly Fish Press

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PROVO, UT, October 28, 2016 – North Star Editions, Inc. (NSE) has acquired the assets of Jolly Fish Press, a Utah-based publisher of young adult, middle-grade fiction, and adult fiction. Under the purchase agreement, the acquisition includes the Jolly Fish Press imprint name and all copyrights to backlist and forthcoming titles. NSE also assumes all partnership agreements.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to five wonderful years at the helm of JFP, but I’m grateful that the books—and the mission we set out to achieve—will live on under the North Star Editions brand,” said Christopher Loke, Publisher of JFP. “NSE and JPF share a similar vision, and I am confident that under their direction JFP will continue to represent some of the best new voices in young adult, adult, and middle-grade books.”

In the last five years, JFP has established itself as an independent publisher with a solid reputation of launching award-winning debut authors. JFP has sought ground-breaking authors with original stories, and NSE will continue to champion those new voices and add JFP to its family of imprints, which include young adult fiction imprint Flux and middle-grade nonfiction imprint Focus Readers.

“We’re thrilled to be bringing Jolly Fish to NSE,” said Flux’s managing editor, Mari Kesselring. “We plan to build off the momentum that the hard-working JFP staff started and continue JFP’s dedication to publishing breakthrough manuscripts, while also using our experienced sales and marketing force to extend the reach of the current title list and future publications.”

NSE is most well-known for its recent acquisition of the YA-fiction imprint Flux, a critically acclaimed and award-winning imprint dedicated to fiction for teens. Since its inception, Flux has set out to be diverse, and through that focus, has launched the careers of best-selling authors Laurie Faria Stolarz, Maggie Stiefvater, and Simone Elkeles. Elkeles’s title Return to Paradise made its debut on the New York Times best-seller list. Several other acclaimed YA authors also debuted with Flux including A.S. King and Carrie Jones.

A host of Flux titles have also won awards from the American Library Association, the Independent Publishers Association, and other literary organizations. In 2014 Beautiful Music for Ugly Children by Kirsten Cronn-Mills won the National Stonewall Award.

In January 2017 NSE will launch Focus Readers, a new middle-grade nonfiction imprint with 50 titles. Primarily intended for use in schools, the imprint will focus on building reading confidence in students in grades 3 through 7 with captivating topics, accessible text, and vibrant visuals to motivate young readers.
